  • As many Cups as you want (5 was a good number) *If using glass please ask family which ones you can use!!
  • Water
  • 2 wooden Pencils

Directions:

  1. Fill each glass with a different amount of water, and set atop a sturdy waterproof surface- kitchen counter or table
  2. Strike each top outer rim of the glass with the wooden pencils to test out how HIGH or LOW the Pitch (frequency of the sound) is.
  3. Ta-da! You’ve created your own small xylophone – like percussion instrument!!
  4. Have fun! You can customize your with different types of cups- plastic/glass/melamine. Experiment and play with the amount of water, even empty cups (or bowls)! How does the size change the sound?! You could maybe even add a drop of food coloring to the water to really make it look unique!
  5. Email your results to Miss Anderson at the OLA email if this is an activity you choose to try out and want to share your results!
